    As much as I'd be more than happy to be an assistant to an instructor, I don't think I have the personality required to run the whole show. Being an instructor is not just teaching and diving, it's also running a business. Australia is in the same situation as the US. There's so much opportunity and it just needs the right people and a good push. I suspect regional ISE sub-agencies that can operate semi-autononously may help things be more streamlined? Is that what you had in mind when you mentioned a "representative"?

    I'd still be interested in at least a "final report" video on any project with the basic story and the highlights.

    I thought about getting into gear servicing as a bit of a side gig... I looked at servicing courses (and manufacturer specific ones) but they're not available in my area and are barely available in my country. I presume it's a lot easier to do when you're properly in the industry with a shop.

    It's the PADI effect of quantity over quality. PADI only requires the bare minimum.

    We use nuts and bolts on a tumbler we built from a free treadmill variable speed motor. Vinegar and blown out immediately with the compressor so no flash rust. Great video.

    If I try to rephrase the question: if you had trained him on extended range and taken the time to explain at every step why he should be modest and train physically, because he just failed the drill, with hands-on example, and ultimately fail the certification, would he then have had some epiphany and stop uncalculated risk behavior ? First of all, he was so closed to your advice that you ended up in an argument. So my impression is that no matter how much time you would have taken, it was not a good interpersonal dynamic. There was no opening for honest/trustful relation, even if he looked up to you. Second, many people, also outside of diving, are stuck in misrepresentations or bad habits that can harm them greatly. You are not supposed to handle that; it is intense enough to be a proper tek trainer and you need to preserve focus for this (i.e. you would become a bad one if you spent your time chasing and trying to fix such behavior).

    Great video. Flavoured breathing gas, maybe a gap in the market. Maybe also a field of science to find out more about if and when how our sense of taste changes under pressure.

    Personally I will never let a Dive shop repair or do any maintenance on my regulators or Tank valves, because I have had very bad experiences in the past with that, so that is a no go for me, because I have seen how many of these so called “technicians” are educated on service, but of course there are some good ones (especially in the old dive shops ) but unfortunately that is not the norm. I have been so lucky to be educated in service of diving gear through the military, and the course was very thorough and expensive, and tailor made for our needs, but paid for by the army, so I was very happy for that! We even stripped a Compressor, repaired it and assembled it again, and even made air quality testing with the Dræger glass tubes afterwards.

    Whenever you disassemble something you are not (very) familiar with it is worth to take photos before each step. You can then use the photos as reference when trying to assemble the system again. This trick has saved me several times...

    We have a local Hydro testing facility in a Civil defense department, and they had an accident once, and the technician told me that they hydro tested a Tank with 3/4 treads with a M25x2 test valve and it flew up in the ceiling when the pressure was about 130 Bar! You could still see the hole in the ceiling from the impact of the valve😄 For cleaning tanks I use MAXI 3 Soap and it is very effective in removing residue from oil, grease and other things and then rinse thoroughly with clean hot water.. If you need to remove some rust first you can tumble it with small stainless steel screws (pointy self driving ones I don’t know the proper English name)

    About the sand blasting.. Here in Denmark 🇩🇰 there is a big commercial Diving Company, and i talked with a technician there who explained to me how they sand blasted their big commercial tanks and regular Diving tanks that they are using on their Diving ships, these tanks are for different gases used in their Commercial Diving operations all over the world, and they are packed in a way so they can lift them on board the ship with a crane 🏗 He explained to me, that they have a long special sandblasting pipe that are blasting in different angles, and a return pipe with suction, because it will else fill the tank very quickly with sand, even in a 50 liter 😄 Imagine if they had to “roll” all their their tanks from the big tank packs on the ship! That would be an almost impossible task to do, compared to the sandblasting method!

  • @jjnxyz4368
    @jjnxyz4368 10 днів тому

    Backmount is more stable, side mount more agile. With back mount the tanks are a solid extension of you, while with side mount they can move separately from you. If they made a solid side mount that stayed perfectly on your side and didn't move around like a loose rec single with a flexible strap... Then sides would always win...

    Enjoyed this video very much. I do enjoy giving basic service work a try on my own before shipping things off. Started with my bicycles and then some automotive, then started building dive harnesses and now working on learning more about regulator and valve service. I have also had people roll their eyes at me and become worried. It is what it is. I cannot stop them from becoming worried. All I can do is try my best, and when it's time to admit that I'm in over my head, ask for professional help.

    I have become a believer of this ‘tackeling’ thing. I really like the way it looks, and the way the double-ender feels in your hand. A small trick I’ve been using that you may like too: I wet the line right before attaching it to the double ender. This makes the line easier to wrap as it does not slip, and then it tightens up once it dries. I burn the ends once it has had a time to dry out.

    I love solitude underwater. Don't have to take care of anyone. Look after anyone. Change dive plan because of anyone. I have to relay on myself only, which keeps me alert and attentive. I like to be little paranoid about all possible dangers I can think of. And once in the water just do what I gotta do to make it safe. Maybe a bit selfish, but I'm ok with it :D Thanks to time spent alone I can enjoy diving in team too.

    How about using an oxygen rebreather - for repetitive dives, in between open circuit dives - to spend more time underwater, while having the benefit of speeding up off gassing and moving toward lower residual nitrogen groups faster? What nitrox mix should I dial in my diving computer for that type of diving? How often should I flush my loop to maintain a predictible mix?

    Hi Achim, good theme for discussion, thanks for that ! But I disagree, because I think you chose an „unfair“ scenario for your obvious reservations about SM. Such an extreme situation you mentioned (ca minute 06:00) is not a common situation in any diving (wreck, cave) .I started my „career“ with BM, D10, D10 300b, D12 and one day I tried SM just for fun and wont miss it again!! Yes there is some hassel at the beginning, but as always its a question of training. But, for me, the gain of comfort above and under water is a complete new quality, besides some not to be neglected improvements in safety aspects. And NO, SM is not just a tool,its , and again for me, such an improvement in mobility and of course of joy in, my, Diving wehtet wreck or just OW ! So ,long blabla, short result: it always depends on personal preferences
